Café Orgánico Marcala S.A., or COMSA, was founded in 2001 by a group of men and women farmers who wanted to empower small farmers in La Paz to earn a livable income through sustainable agricultural practices and forward-thinking business decisions. Today they have over 1200 members and are well known world wide for their organic farming practices and consistently excellent coffees. Agronomists are available to all the farmers and are able to work individually with them based on soil samples from their farms and recommend optimal farming practices to get the best quality yields. Social equality, transparency, and non-discrimination are pillars of COMSA's charter and they remain one of the best examples of coffee cooperatives elevating communities from poverty while simultaneously producing excellent coffee year after year.

COMSA has significantly increased the participation of women within the organization, which has resulted in an active women’s group that processes their own community lots called Manos de Mujer.
