Subversive Cross Stitch began in the spring of 2003 as a form of anger management therapy when founder, Julie, was dealing with a bully of a boss. At Julie's wit’s end and in dire need of some art therapy, she stopped by a craft store on the way home from work one day and picked up an ornate sampler—I hadn’t done any cross stitch since I was a kid. Once I finished the intricate border of pink flowers, I decided to stitch the word “F*ck” right in the center. It felt so great, and I couldn't wait to share it with others!
